Tooth Braces
Braces are used to treat the incorrectly positioned teeth, improve their function and appearance. This treatment is based on tooth movements which bring them in correct alignment. This also helps evenly distributing the biting forces which is good for the overall health of the teeth and gums.
Many people have incorrectly placed teeth or crooked teeth. Because of this improper alignment, teeth do not contact uniformly which as a result exerts pressure on the jaw muscles causing pain in the joint and occasional headache too. Also, the appearance of the patient is majorly affected by the teeth alignment. Keeping all these factors in mind, one should get an orthodontic treatment done to address such issues.
Braces treatments cause tooth movements which have to slow and gradual. These treatments last for about 15-24 months depending on the severity of the case. Standard x rays are needed before the commencement of the treatment. Monthly once a recall checkup is required to tighten the braces and to monitor the progress.
Children Orthodontics
It is recommended that children at around age 7 have an initial orthodontic evaluation to verify that teeth and jaws and developing properly. In the event children have some discrepancy, an early treatment plan can be developed that in many instances can change the course of growth or tooth eruption preventing future problems and or jaw discrepancies.
Early intervention treatment for children can take between 6 -16 months depending on the type of problems diagnosed and the amount of needed treatment to correct them.
TYPES OF DENTAL BRACES
Traditional Metal Braces
Metal braces have progressed since the early days and are now lighter in weight and structure than they used to be. They are made from a high-grade stainless steel and have brackets that are attached to each tooth using a type of cement. The brackets are linked to each other with a thin archwire, which puts pressure on the teeth to cause them to move slowly into the correct position.
The archwires are connected to the brackets using tiny elastics known as ligatures or o-rings, which your orthodontist will change each time he tightens the braces.
Ceramic Braces
Tooth colored braces work in the same way as traditional braces, but the brackets are made from a clear, transparent ceramic material. The braces are less visible to others, which makes them a popular choice for adults who need orthodontic treatment. Patients wearing these types of braces occasionally find that the elastic rings around the braces become discolored due to food stains.
Self ligating Braces
Self-ligating braces are placed much like conventional braces, with the exception of ligature-no elastic or rubber bands or metal ties are present around the braces. Instead, special clips are used to help the archwire move your teeth into place.
This type of braces is currently enjoying a wave of popularity with orthodontists because it provides gentler treatment and requires fewer dental visits. Damon braces are self-ligating and use a slide mechanism instead of elastics to connect the archwires.
These braces produce faster results because the teeth can move on their own without needing to be adjusted. This causes less friction and pressure on the teeth, so movement is less painful. The braces are also easier to keep clean.

Lingual Braces
All Braces are placed on the front of the teeth but what sets lingual braces apart is in their placement on the back of the teeth. Lingual braces are virtually invisible, and that’s the main reason eligible adult patients choose them as it doesn’t interfere with their social and professional lives.
Clear and Removable Aligners
Clear Aligners are another type of invisible braces which are an excellent and aesthetic option for straightening teeth.
Invisalign is a type of clear aligner that you can use instead of metal or Damon braces. This involves a range of clear plastic aligners that resemble mouth guards, which are custom-made for you. They are removable for eating and cleaning, and you change them out for a newly made aligner every two weeks. Each new aligner takes the adjustment of your teeth one step further.

Knowing what foods you can and can’t eat with your braces will help you achieve the optimum results after your orthodontic treatment has been completed.
- Fruits: Choose soft fruits and cut hard fruits such as apples into pieces that are more easily chewed
- Vegetables: Avoid hard, raw vegetables such as raw carrots, cauliflower, and broccoli. But you need to enjoy a variety of vegetables for a healthy diet, so choose softer raw vegetables such as leafy greens and cook or steam vegetables for a softer texture.
- Grains: These are often cooked or baked, but sometimes whole grains can get caught in your braces. Hard rolls can also be a problem with braces. Cut them into pieces for easier chewing.
- Dairy: You won’t have problems with most dairy products, although some types of cheese can get caught under your braces.
- Meat: Eating meat from the bone and stringy cuts of meat are problems for getting caught in your braces or even damaging your braces. Remove meat from the bone, cut it into smaller bites, and choose tender cuts.
- Nuts and Seeds: These can get caught in your braces and bend wires. You may want to choose nut butters and ground seeds instead.
- Candy: You should avoid both sticky and hard candy when you wear braces.
At the end of braces treatment retainers which may be fixed and/or removable are given to all patients for a period of 1 year to help retain the corrections achieved during the treatment.
