Jaw cysts and tumours develop either in the upper or lower jaw bone and can potentially affect anyone across all age ranges (from children to adults).They can appear as a single lesion or as multiple lesions in the upper and lower jaws.

They usually are innocous and remain unnoticed when they are small but many progress to a significant swelling which then causes concern and patients seek an opinion. They generally grow slowly. Its usually during routine x-rays or other jaw scans that these lesions are discovered

Every tumour or cyst of the jaw has its own growth potential and behavioural characteristics. One needs to biopsy the lesion with along with proper X-rays / scans. In some cases additional blood tests may be needed. Depending on the exact type and size of the lesion, treatment may involve a simple surgery to extensive jaw removal and reconstruction (with microvascular surgery or 3D printed jaw replacements). Restoring the shape of jaw and teeth to its original condition is what the ultimate goal of the treatment is about.

The surgery can either be one step or can be done in a few steps that are distributed over a period of a few months. It is decided by the extent of the deformity , type of tumour/cyst and the medical condition of the patient. An extensive examination of the patient is done and standard, 3D x-rays are needed before the commencement of the treatment.
